With so many diets out there, how do you know what’s going to be the best one to follow? The Keto diet is basically the Atkins diet, which my dad started after his diabetes diagnosis in the late 90’s. There’s Paleo, intermittent fasting, carnivore, vegan, flexitarian, raw foods, you name it and someone will be proclaiming it the best diet they ever tried.

In the past thirty years of being fascinated by the food and nutrition industry, I’ve witnessed eggs, chocolate, wine, and meat all be both proclaimed as great nutritional sources and villainized for health risks they present. Every scientist has something that they’re looking to prove in terms of food science. Eventually, what winds up being most sustainable is making sure that you get your nutrients from a large variety of sources, while being mindful of your intake quantity.

Each diet variation has its pluses and minuses, and may not work well for you even though they worked fabulously for someone you know.

So here are my ideas for finding your best diet:

  • Make sure it’s easy to follow and convenient. You want something that’s sustainable… long-term and throughout the day!
  • Make sure it provides a variety of vitamins and minerals in addition to protein, carbohydrates and fat.
  • Don’t exclude anything, unless it’s something that reacts with your medical conditions. (Say, allergies, diabetes, or something as serious as Crohn’s.)
  • It includes lower salt diets, plenty of fruits and vegetables, and small amounts of grains and starches.

That’s the start! From there you can refine your food to your tastes and how your body reacts. It’s okay to let go of the complicated rules and allow food to fuel you instead of causing stress.

I’ll be in Anaheim for a fitness conference this summer where I’ll be learning more about current and future nutrition trends. I can’t wait to bring the newest discussions back to you. Meanwhile, I’m here to help you figure out some of your own food confusion. Send me a reply with “Food” as the subject and we will get you on the road to the best diet for you. 🙂
